Study Structure of Registered Nurse


Level of Degree: Bachelor


The Registered Nurse program requires 210 credits and includes:

  • Basic and professional studies (113 ECTS)

  • Elective studies (7 ECTS)

  • Clinical practicums (75 ECTS)

  • Bachelor’s thesis (15 ECTS)


The Registered Nurse focuses on skill development through:

  • Basic and professional studies (50% of the program).

  • Theoretical and clinical skills.

  • Lectures, independent work, and group activities.


Before graduating, students must complete a thesis aligned with the European Qualification Framework (EQF) Level 6.


Advanced studies will take place in the final two semesters after you have shown your nursing skills and completed 180 ECTS.

The Bachelor of Health Care at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences offers a comprehensive learning experience that prepares students for a successful nursing career.


  • High Fidelity Simulation (HFS) is used at all stages.

  • Clinical practicums make up nearly half of the program and require shift work, including weekends, in various locations in Finland.

  • First Year: Learn the basics of nursing care, chronic care, and medical nursing.

  • Second Year: Perform complete health exams, take medical history, and assess health; study mental health and family care.

  • End of Program: Study gerontological nursing, outpatient care, leadership, clinical judgment, and advanced decision-making.

  • Tuition fee: 10,000 Euro/year

  • Scholarships: Early bird discount of 2,000 Euro, scholarship of 6,000 Euro (based on Finnish language proficiency)

After 2 years of field-specific work experience after graduation, you can continue your studies to a Master of Health Care (YAMK) at the polytechnics. Depending on your residence permit type, you might be able to study master's degree without tuition fee alongside working.


Selection methods:


  • International UAS Exam (Spring and Autumn)

  • Certificate-based selection (e.g., Finnish matriculation, International Baccalaureate, vocational qualification completed after 1 August 2015) 

  • Applicants have to have secondary education and proof of English. Check specific requirements and selection methods from here.
